a town of Canada East, inferior in importance only to Quebec and Montreal in that section of the province, stands on the north bank of the St Lawrence, at its confluence with the St Maurice, 90 miles from Quebec, and about as far from Montreal. It has a splendid Roman Catholic cathedral, English and Scotch churches, a Wesleyan chapel, a mechanics' institute, and several schools. In and about the town there are large iron-works, saw-mills, and machine shops; and there is an active trade in lumber which is conveyed down the St Maurice. Three Rivers is one of the oldest towns in the province; it was for a long time stationary, but is now making rapid progress. Pop. about 7000.
