a market-town of Ireland, in the county and 20 miles N.N.E. of Tipperary, on the right bank of the Suir. It is for the most part well built of stone; and has a small episcopal church, a Roman Catholic cathedral and college, a convent and two nunneries, Wesleyan and Baptist chapels, several schools, a market-house, court-house, jail, hospital, and barracks. A considerable trade in corn is carried on. In the neighbourhood are the ruins of a monastery and two castles. Pop. 5908.
