including Bulloa, a district of British India, presidency of Bengal, bounded on the N. by those of Silhet and Mymensing, W. by those of Dacca and Backergunge, S. by the Bay of Bengal, and E. by Independent Tipperah. Length 110 miles from N. to S.; breadth, 68; area, 4850 square miles. It is watered by the Brahmaputra, which forms its western boundary, and by its affluents, the Goomtee and others. It contains extensive forests, haunted by very large elephants and other wild beasts. Rice, cotton, and betel-nuts are the chief productions; and salt is also obtained near the Bay of Bengal. Pop. 1,406,950. The capital is a town of the same name, 48 miles E.S.E. of Dacca. Independent Tipperah is a mountainous region to the east, with an area of 7632 square miles, occupied by wild tribes.
