or TERNOVA, a fortified town of European Turkey, Bulgaria, on the Jantra, an affluent of the Danube, 35 miles E. of Sistova. It stands on a basaltic hill about 1000 feet high, and is defended by walls and ditches. Tirnova is the seat of a Greek bishop, and contains many churches, synagogues, and mosques. Pop. 16,000.
