or Tlemcen, a town of Africa, Algeria, in the province and 50 miles S.W. of Oran. It is an ancient place, with narrow streets, containing numerous fountains, and houses generally one story high, built in some cases of brick or stone, and in others only of clay. It is enclosed by walls, and has a citadel and several mosques. In the vicinity there are extensive orchards, and some interesting remains of antiquity. Manufactures of iron, morocco-leather, woollen, cotton, and linen cloth, are carried on here, and there is a considerable trade with the interior. Tlemcen was captured by the French in 1836; but given up the next year, and again occupied by them in 1842. Pop. (1851) 14,165; of whom 11,273 were natives.
