or Torzok, a town of European Russia, in the government and 36 miles W.N.W. of Tver, on the Tvertza. It was destroyed by fire in 1767; but has since been rebuilt in a very regular style, the private houses of wood, and the public buildings of stone. Of the latter the principal are the cathedral, 22 other churches, 2 convents, a government-house, and a bazaar. The principal manufacture is the embroidery of silk and leather, for making shoes, gloves, and other articles. The position of the town on a navigable river and on the road between Moscow and St Petersburg, is favourable for commerce; and a considerable trade is carried on, three annual fairs being held. Pop. 10,160.
