a fortified town of France, in the department of Meurthe, on the left bank of the Moselle, 12 miles W. of Nancy. The fortifications are strong, consisting of walls and bastions, and the town is for the most part well, though irregularly built. The ancient cathedral is a fine Gothic building, and the Episcopal palace is now used as the town-hall. Toul has also a college, arsenal, barracks, and hospitals, manufactures of lace, calico, leather, and pottery, and some trade in wine and brandy. Pop. 8506.
