the capital of Austrian Silesia, and of a principality and circle of its own name, stands on the Oppa, a tributary of the Oder, 36 miles N.E. of Olmütz. It is pleasantly situated, and well built; is surrounded by walls, and entered by four gates. It is the seat of several courts; and among its public buildings are a castle, three churches, four chapels, a town-hall, gymnasium with museum attached, and theatre. Manufactures of linen and woollen stuffs, soap, leather, &c., are actively carried on. In 1820, the diplomatic congress, which afterwards removed to Laybach, sat for a month here.
