a town of Belgium, in the middle of a wide plain, in the province and 25 miles N.E. of Antwerp. The streets are regular, and the houses for the most part substantially built. The chief buildings are the town-hall; an old castle, now used as a courthouse; a prison, several churches and chapels, hospitals, convents, &c. The manufactures are extensive, comprising linen, woollen, and cotton cloth, silk, lace, carpets, paper, cutlery, pottery, tobacco, vinegar, brandy, &c. Pop. 13,250.
