or Venlo, a fortified town of Holland, in the province of Limburg, on the right bank of the Meuse, 43 miles N.E. of Maastricht. It stands in a marshy region, and is entered by four gates. The houses are much crowded together. The town contains three market-places, a town-hall, several churches, hospitals, and schools, arsenals, breweries, tanneries, and manufactories of tiles, pipes, tobacco, and vinegar. An active trade is carried on. Pop. 7179.
