a town of Hanover, formerly capital of a duchy of the same name, in the province and 21 miles S.E. of Bremen, on the right bank of the Aller, which here divides into two arms, and is crossed by a large bridge. It is walled, and contains a Gothic cathedral, two other churches, a town-hall, gymnasium, hospital, and barracks. Tobacco, beer, and brandy are made here, and there is some trade in corn and cattle.
