It is walled, and for the most part well built; and it contains a handsome cathedral in the principal square; two other churches; an episcopal palace; the ancient castle of the Sforzas, altered into a palace by Bramante, and now used for barracks; an episcopal seminary, college, and other schools; and several hospitals. Silk stuffs, hats, soap, and macaroni are made here. Pop. 15,221.
