a town of Sardinia, Piedmont, capital of a province of the same name in the administrative division of Alessandria, is situated on the Staffora, 18 miles E.N.E. of Alessandria. The town is well built, is surrounded by walls, and has an elegant collegiate church, a Jesuit's college, hospital, and barracks. It is the seat of a governor and of a provincial court. There are manufactures of woollen and silk stuffs; and an active trade in corn, wine, and silk is carried on. Pop. (1848) 11,454. The province has an area of 308 square miles, and contains 101,695 inhabitants.
