island of Holland, province of Zeeland, the most westerly of those lying between the East and West Scheldt. It is about 11 miles in length by 10 in breadth, and being below the level of the sea, is protected by immense dunes and dykes. It is fertile, but unhealthy for foreigners. The chief towns are Middleburg and Vlissingen or Flushing. It was occupied by the English under the Earl of Chatham in 1809, when 7000 soldiers perished from ague. Pop. about 50,000.
