a town of the Austrian Empire, capital of a circle in Upper Austria, on the Traun, 16 miles S.W. of Linz. It is an ancient town, walled and entered by four gates, with two suburbs; and it has two ancient castles, Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches, a large hospital, and a military and various other schools. It is the seat of government offices and courts of law; and has cotton factories, paper and powder mills, copper-works, and a considerable trade in corn, timber, and vegetables. Pop. 5670.
