a town of France, capital of an arrondissement of the same name in the department of Bas-Rhin, on the right bank of the Lauter, and on the Bavarian frontier, 34 miles N.N.E. of Strasbourg. It is a fortress of some strength, being connected with a system of military works here known as the "lines of Wissembourg," protecting this portion of the French frontier. It is tolerably well built, and has several good public buildings, among which are an old collegiate church and barracks. It has also a Protestant church, communal college, court of primary instance, and some manufactures of hosiery, straw hats, soap, and earthenware. Pop. (1856) 4643.
