or WALSINGHAM, a market town of England, county of Durham, on the left bank of the Wear, where it is joined by the Wescrow, 13 miles W.S.W. of Durham. It is pleasantly situated, and has an ancient parish church, a townhall, and a free grammar school. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the manufacture of woollen cloths and hardware goods, or in the coal, lead, and limestone works in the vicinity. Pop. of parish (1851), 4,585.
