a city of Arabia, once the capital of Yemen; but its port having fallen into a state of decay, the principal city of the province is now Mocha. It stands on a river of the same name 15 miles from the Red Sea, and 32 miles N. of Mocha. The old mosques and minarets give to the place a magnificent appearance from a distance, and it is still distinguished by an academy, much resorted to by the youth of Yemen. But the town is gradually falling into ruins, and even the stones of the houses are being carried off and sold, to be elsewhere applied to the purposes of building. Pop. 7000.
