a town of the Austrian empire, capital of a circle of the same name in Moravia, on the Thaya, 36 miles S.S.W. of Brünn. It has an old castle, formerly the residence of the margraves of Moravia; several churches, among which is a curious old circular building; a gymnasium; courts of law; manufactories of cloth; and some trade in wine and mustard.
