A new Method of computing the Sums of certain Series; by Mr. John Landen: Communicated by Mr. Thomas Simpson, F. R. S.\n\nRead Feb. 28, 1760.\n\nAs the improving the analytic art, especially any branch of it that relates to the summation of series, may, by facilitating computations, conduce to the improvement of several branches of science; it is presumed, that this paper, which exhibits a new and easy method of computing the sums of a great number of infinite series, may be acceptable to the mathematical world, and deemed worthy to be inserted in the British Philosophical Transactions.\n\n1.\n\nSupposing $x$ to be the sine of the circular arc $z$, whose radius is 1, $\\frac{x}{\\sqrt{1-x^2}}$ will be $= z$; and, consequently, $\\frac{x}{\\sqrt{x^2-1}} = \\frac{z}{\\sqrt{-1}}$. From whence, by taking the correct fluents, we have hyp. log. $\\frac{x + \\sqrt{x^2 - 1}}{\\sqrt{-1}} = \\frac{z}{\\sqrt{-1}}$.\n\nHence,\nHence, writing \\(a\\) for one fourth of the periphery of the circle whose radius is 1, and taking \\(x\\) equal to the said radius, we find hyp. log. \\(\\frac{1}{\\sqrt{x-1}} = \\frac{a}{\\sqrt{x-1}}\\); and, consequently, hyp. log. \\(\\sqrt{x-1} = \\frac{-a}{\\sqrt{x-1}}\\), and hyp. log. \\(-1 = \\pm \\frac{2a}{\\sqrt{x-1}}\\).\n\n2.\n\nThe hyp. log. of \\(\\frac{1}{1-x}\\) being \\(= x + \\frac{x^2}{2} + \\frac{x^3}{3} + \\frac{x^4}{4}, \\&c.\\)\n\n\\(F =\\) fluent of \\(\\frac{\\dot{x}}{x}\\) hyp. log. \\(\\frac{1}{1-x}\\), is \\(= x + \\frac{x^2}{2^2} + \\frac{x^3}{3^2} + \\frac{x^4}{4^2}, \\&c.\\)\n\n\\(F =\\) fluent of \\(\\frac{\\dot{x}}{x} F = x + \\frac{x^2}{2^3} + \\frac{x^3}{3^3} + \\frac{x^4}{4^3}, \\&c.\\)\n\n\\(F =\\) fluent of \\(\\frac{\\dot{x}}{x} F = x + \\frac{x^2}{2^4} + \\frac{x^3}{3^4} + \\frac{x^4}{4^4}, \\&c.\\)\n\n\\(F =\\) fluent of \\(\\frac{\\dot{x}}{x} F = x + \\frac{x^2}{2^5} + \\frac{x^3}{3^5} + \\frac{x^4}{4^5}, \\&c.\\)\n\n\\&c. \\&c. \\&c.\n\n3.\n\nBy writing, in the first equation in the preceding article, \\(\\frac{1}{x}\\) instead of \\(x\\), we have\n\nHyp. log. \\(\\frac{1}{1-\\frac{1}{x}} = x^{-1} + \\frac{x^{-2}}{2} + \\frac{x^{-3}}{3}, \\&c.\\)\n\nBut the hyp. log. of \\(\\frac{1}{1-\\frac{1}{x}}\\) is \\(=\\) hyp. log. \\(\\frac{x}{x-1} =\\)\nhyp. log. \\(\\frac{1}{1-x}\\) + hyp. log. \\(x\\) + hyp. log. \\(-1\\) = \\(\\pm 2b + X +\\) hyp. log. \\(\\frac{1}{1-x}\\), \\(b\\) being put for \\(\\frac{a}{\\sqrt{-1}}\\), and \\(X\\) for the hyp. log. of \\(x\\).\n\nIt is evident, therefore, that\n\nHyp. log. \\(\\frac{1}{1-x}\\) is \\(= \\mp 2b - X + x^{-1} + \\frac{x^{-2}}{2} + \\frac{x^{-3}}{3}, \\&c.\\)\n\nwhere, of the two signs prefixed to \\(2b\\), the upper one takes place, when the hyp. log. of \\(-1\\) is taken equal to \\(\\frac{2a}{\\sqrt{-1}}\\), likewise when \\(x\\) is taken equal to \\(\\sqrt{-1}\\); and the lower one takes place, when the hyp. log. of \\(-1\\) is taken equal to \\(\\frac{2a}{\\sqrt{-1}}\\), also when \\(x\\) is taken equal to \\(\\frac{1}{\\sqrt{-1}}\\): wherefore, if we observe to take the value of hyp. log. of \\(-1\\), as last mentioned, and \\(x\\) equal to \\(\\frac{1}{\\sqrt{-1}}\\), instead of \\(\\sqrt{-1}\\), we need retain only the lower of the said signs.\n\n4.\n\nFor brevity sake, we shall, in what follows, put the series \\(1 + \\frac{1}{2^2} + \\frac{1}{3^2} + \\frac{1}{4^2}, \\&c.\\) = \\(P\\),\n\n\\(1 + \\frac{1}{2^4} + \\frac{1}{3^4} + \\frac{1}{4^4}, \\&c.\\) = \\(P\\),\n\n\\(1 + \\frac{1}{2^6} + \\frac{1}{3^6} + \\frac{1}{4^6}, \\&c.\\) = \\(P\\),\n\n\\(\\&c.\\) \\(\\&c.\\)\n\n\\(1 + \\frac{1}{3^2} + \\frac{1}{5^2} + \\frac{1}{7^2}, \\&c.\\) = \\(Q\\)\n\\[ \\begin{align*}\n1 - \\frac{1}{3^2} + \\frac{1}{5^2} - \\frac{1}{7^2} + \\ldots & = q, \\\\\n1 + \\frac{1}{3^4} + \\frac{1}{5^4} + \\frac{1}{7^4} + \\ldots & = Q, \\\\\n1 - \\frac{1}{3^5} + \\frac{1}{5^5} - \\frac{1}{7^5} + \\ldots & = q, \\\\\n& \\vdots\n\\end{align*} \\]\n\n5.\n\nMultiplying the last equation in art. 3. by \\( \\frac{x}{x} \\), and taking the correct fluents, we have\n\n\\[ F = 2P + 2bX - \\frac{x^2}{2} - x^{-1} - \\frac{x^{-2}}{2^2} - \\frac{x^{-3}}{3^2}, \\ldots \\]\n\nFrom whence, by multiplying by \\( \\frac{x}{x} \\), and taking the fluents, we get\n\n\\[ F = 2PX + bX^2 - \\frac{x^3}{2.3} + x^{-1} + \\frac{x^{-2}}{2^3} + \\frac{x^{-3}}{3^3}, \\ldots \\]\n\nAgain, multiplying the last equation by \\( \\frac{x}{x} \\), and taking the correct fluents, we find\n\n\\[ F = 2P + PX^2 + \\frac{bX^3}{3} - \\frac{x^4}{2.3.4} - x^{-1} - \\frac{x^{-2}}{2^4} - \\frac{x^{-3}}{3^4}, \\ldots \\]\n\nAnd, by proceeding in the same manner, we find\n\n\\[ F = 2PX + \\frac{PX^3}{3} + \\frac{bX^4}{3.4} - \\frac{x^5}{2.3.4.5} + x^{-1} + \\frac{x^{-2}}{2^5} + \\frac{x^{-3}}{3^5}, \\ldots \\]\n\n6.\n\nNow, it is obvious, that \\( x + \\frac{x^2}{2^2} + \\frac{x^3}{3^2}, \\ldots \\) the value of \\( F \\) in art. 2. must be equal to \\( 2P + 2bX \\).\n\\[\n\\frac{x^2}{2} - x^{-1} - \\frac{x^{-2}}{2^2} - \\frac{x^{-3}}{3^2}, \\text{ &c.}\n\\]\nthe value of \\( F \\)\nin art. 5. when both series converge.\n\nTherefore,\n\\[\n\\frac{x + x^{-1}}{1^2} + \\frac{x^2 + x^{-2}}{2^2} + \\frac{x^3 + x^{-3}}{3^2}, \\text{ &c.}\n\\]\nis then \\( = 2 \\frac{\\Pi}{P} + 2 b X - \\frac{X^2}{2} \\).\n\nFrom which equation, by taking \\( x \\) equal to \\(-1\\),\nwe have \\(-\\frac{1}{1^2} + \\frac{1}{2^2} - \\frac{1}{3^2} + \\frac{1}{4^2}, \\text{ &c.} = \\frac{\\Pi}{P} + b^2 = \\frac{\\Pi}{P} - a^2; \\text{ and, by taking } x \\text{ equal to } \\frac{1}{\\sqrt{-1}}, \\text{ we have} \\\\\n-\\frac{1}{1^2} + \\frac{1}{2^2} - \\frac{1}{3^2} + \\frac{1}{4^2}, \\text{ &c.} = 4 \\frac{\\Pi}{P} + 3 b^2 = 4 \\frac{\\Pi}{P} - 3 a^2. \\]\n\nTherefore \\( 4 \\frac{\\Pi}{P} - 3 a^2 \\) is \\( = \\frac{\\Pi}{P} - a^2; \\)\n\nHence \\( \\frac{\\Pi}{P} \\) is found \\( = \\frac{2a^2}{3}. \\)\n\nMoreover \\( \\frac{1}{1^2} + \\frac{1}{2^2} + \\frac{1}{3^2} + \\frac{1}{4^2}, \\text{ &c. being } = \\frac{\\Pi}{P}, \\text{ by supposition; and } -\\frac{1}{1^2} + \\frac{1}{2^2} - \\frac{1}{3^2} + \\frac{1}{4^2}, \\text{ &c.} = \\frac{\\Pi}{P} - a^2, \\text{ as found above; we, by subtraction, get} \\\\\n\\frac{2}{1^2} + \\frac{2}{3^2} + \\frac{2}{5^2}, \\text{ &c. } (= 2 \\frac{\\Pi}{Q}) = a^2, \\text{ and, consequently } \\frac{\\Pi}{Q} = \\frac{a^2}{2}. \\]\n\n**Scholium.**\n\nThe hyp. log. of \\( \\frac{1}{1-x} \\) being \\( = x + \\frac{x^2}{2} + \\frac{x^3}{3}, \\text{ &c.} \\)\nwe, by writing \\( 1-x \\) instead of \\( x \\), have\n\n\\[ 4C_2 \\] Hyp.\nHyp. log. of \\( \\frac{1}{x} = 1 - x + \\frac{(1-x)^2}{2} + \\frac{(1-x)^3}{3}, \\) &c.,\n\nand consequently \\( X = -1 - x - \\frac{(1-x)^2}{2} - \\frac{(1-x)^3}{3}, \\) &c.\n\nMoreover the fluent of \\( \\frac{\\dot{x}}{x} \\times \\text{hyp. log. of } \\frac{1}{1-x} \\) is \\( x + \\frac{x^2}{2} + \\frac{x^3}{3}, \\) &c. which vanishes when \\( x \\) vanishes;\n\nand the fluent of \\( \\frac{\\dot{x}}{1-x} \\times X \\) is \\( 1 - x + \\frac{(1-x)^2}{2} + \\frac{(1-x)^3}{3}, \\)\n\n&c. — \\( P \\), being corrected so as to vanish when \\( x \\) vanishes.\n\nBut the fluent of \\( \\frac{\\dot{x}}{x} \\times \\text{hyp. log. of } \\frac{1}{1-x} + \\text{fluent of } \\frac{\\dot{x}}{1-x} \\times X \\) is \\( X \\times \\text{hyp. log. of } \\frac{1}{1-x}, \\) which also vanishes when \\( x \\) vanishes.\n\nTherefore \\( X \\times \\text{hyp. log. of } \\frac{1}{1-x} \\) is \\( x + \\frac{x^2}{2} + \\frac{x^3}{3}, \\)\n\n&c. \\(+ 1 - x + \\frac{(1-x)^2}{2} + \\frac{(1-x)^3}{3}, \\) &c. — \\( P \\).\n\nFrom whence, by taking \\( x \\) equal to \\( \\frac{1}{2}, \\) we find\n\n— square of hyp. log. of 2 \\(= 2 \\times \\frac{1}{1^2 \\cdot 2^2} + \\frac{1}{2^2 \\cdot 2^2} + \\frac{1}{3^2 \\cdot 2^3}, \\) &c.\n\n— \\( P \\): hence, \\( P \\) being before found \\(= \\frac{2a^2}{3}, \\) it appears that, when \\( x \\) is \\(= \\frac{1}{2}, \\) the series \\( x + \\frac{x^2}{2} + \\frac{x^3}{3}, \\) &c. is\n\n\\(= \\frac{a^2}{3} - \\frac{1}{2} \\times \\text{hyp. log. of } 2 \\).\n\n7.\n\nFurthermore, \\( x + \\frac{x^2}{2} + \\frac{x^3}{3}, \\) &c. the value of \\( P \\) in art. 2. must be equal to \\( 2P \\times X + bX^2 - \\frac{x^3}{2 \\cdot 3} + x^{-1} \\).\n\\[ \\frac{x^{-2}}{2^3} + \\frac{x^{-3}}{3^3}, \\&c. \\text{ the value of } \\mathbb{F} \\text{ in art. 5. when both series converge.} \\]\n\nTherefore \\( \\frac{x-x^{-1}}{1^3} + \\frac{x^2-x^{-2}}{2^2} + \\frac{x^3-x^{-3}}{3^3}, \\&c. \\) is then \\( = 2 \\frac{\\mathbb{P}}{\\mathbb{X}} + b X^2 - \\frac{X^3}{2.3} \\).\n\nFrom whence, by taking \\( x \\) equal to \\(-1\\), we have \\( 4b \\frac{\\mathbb{P}}{\\mathbb{X}} + 4b^3 - \\frac{8b^3}{2.3} = 0 \\); and, consequently, \\( \\frac{Q}{\\sqrt{-1}} = \\frac{a^3}{2} \\), as in art. 6.\n\nLikewise \\( x + \\frac{x^3}{3^3} + \\frac{x^5}{5^3}, \\&c. \\) the value of \\( \\frac{G}{\\sqrt{-1}} \\) in art. 9. must be equal to \\( 2 \\frac{Q}{\\sqrt{-1}} X + \\frac{b X^2}{2} + x^{-1} + \\frac{x^{-3}}{3^3} + \\frac{x^{-5}}{5^3}, \\&c. \\) the value of \\( \\frac{G}{\\sqrt{-1}} \\) in art. 11. when both series converge.\n\nTherefore \\[ \\frac{x - x^{-1}}{1^3} + \\frac{x^3 - x^{-3}}{3^3} + \\frac{x^5 - x^{-5}}{5^3}, \\&c. \\] is then \\( = 2 \\frac{Q}{\\sqrt{-1}} X + \\frac{b X^2}{2} \\).\n\nHence, by taking \\( x = \\frac{1}{\\sqrt{-1}} \\), we find \\( \\frac{2}{\\sqrt{-1}} \\times q = 2 b \\frac{Q}{\\sqrt{-1}} + \\frac{b^3}{2} = \\frac{a^3}{2 \\sqrt{-1}} \\);
