ASOPH, a town of Coban Tartary, in Asia, situated on the river Don, near its mouth, a little to the east of the Palus Mæotis, or Sea of Azoph. It has been several times taken and retaken of late years; but in 1739, the contending powers agreed that the fortifications should be demolished, and the town remain under the dominion of Russia. E.
