The root is composed of a few short white fibres: the plant grows to about a foot high: the stalk is round, hollow, jointed, and has two or three long, narrow, grassy leaves on it, hairy at the edges: at the top of the stalk grows a short spike consisting of two or three little rigid clusters of flowers: the seeds are large; and somewhat like barley, but flatter.
