DIOCESE, or DIOCESS the circuit, or extent of the jurisdiction of a BISHOP.—The word is formed from the Greek diocesis, government, administration; formed of diokis, which the ancient glossaries render administratio, moderatio, ordinatio: hence diocesis the modus, the administration or government of a city.
