TRIPOLE, an ancient and considerable town of Asia, in Syria, on the coast of the Mediterranean sea. The inhabitants are near 60,000, consisting of Turks, Christians, and Jews. There is one very handsome mosque; and all the houses have fountains belonging to them. It is defended by a good citadel, with a garrison of janissaries. This town was anciently in Phœnicia, whose inhabitants were so famous for navigation in the early ages of the world. It is the residence of a bashaw or tangjack, who also governs the territory about it, where there are a great number of mulberry-trees, which enable them to carry on a silk-manufacture in the town.
