Sea-WATER is a solution of common salt, sal catharticus amarus, a selenitic substance, and a compound of muriatic acid with magnesia, mixed together in various proportions. It may be freshened by simple distillation without any addition; a discovery for which we are indebted to Dr Lind. Sea-water by itself has a purgative quality, owing to the salts it contains; and has been greatly recommended in scrofulous disorders. Externally applied, sea-water is more powerful than common water, by reason of its superior coldness and specific gravity.
