NARVA, a strong town of the Russian empire, in Livonia, with a castle, and a harbour. It was taken by the Muscovites from the Danes in 1558, by the Swedes in 1581, and they defeated the Muscovites near it in 1700; but it was retaken by the Russians in 1704, by storm, and the inhabitants sent to Astrachan. It is seated on the river Narva, 95 miles S. W. of Wiburg, and 172 N. E. of Riga. E. Long. 29. o. N. Lat. 59. 8.
