DIOCESE, or DIOCESS, the circuit or extent of the jurisdiction of a BISHOP.—The word is formed from the Greek diocesis, government, administration; formed of diokos, which the ancient glossaries render administro, moderor, ordino: hence diocesis the nomos, the administration or government of a city.
