DIOCESE, or DIOCESS, the circuit or extent of the jurisdiction of a BISHOP. The word is formed from the Greek διακονία, government, administration; formed of διακονία, which the ancient glossaries render administratio, moderator, ordinatio; hence διακονία της πόλεως, the administration, or government of a city.
