MARACAYBO, a town of South America, and capi-
tal of the province of Venezuela, seated near a lake of
the same name. It carries on a great trade in skins and
chocolate, and they have likewise very fine tobacco.
The population is estimated at 22,000. It was taken
by the French bucaniers in 1666 and 1678. W. Long.
