MARACAYBO, a lake in South America, 200 miles
long and 100 broad, which discharges itself by a river
into the North sea. It is well defended by strong
forts; which, however, did not hinder Sir Henry Mor-
gan, a bucanier, from plundering several towns on the
coast.
