JAFFA, an ancient town of Asia in Palestine, for-
merly called Jappa. Its former grandeur is now greatly
diminished. It is situated 50 miles north-west of
Jerusalem, while others make it only 27, and 100
from the town of Acre. It was taken by the French
under Bonaparte, in February 1799, but afterwards re-
