CAMPESTRE, in antiquity, a sort of cover for
the privities, worn by the Roman soldiers in their field
exercises; being girt under the navel, and hanging
down to the knees. The name is supposed to be form-
ed from campus, the field or place where the Roman
soldiers performed their exercises.
