PATRAS, an ancient town of European Turkey, in the Morea, with a Greek archbishop's see. It contains about 440 families; and the Jews, who are one-third part of the inhabitants, have four synagogues. There are several handsome mosques and Greek churches. The Jews carry on a trade in silk, leather, honey, wax, and cheese. There are cypress trees of a prodigious height, and excellent pomegranates, citrons, and oranges. It stands at a little distance from the sea, and its port is now choked up with mud. It is in the hands of the Turks. E. Long. 21. 45. N. Lat. 38. 17.
