CHALYBES, in Ancient Geography, an ancient people of the Hither Asia. Their situation is differently assigned; Strabo placing them in Paphlagonia, to the east of Synope; Apollonius Rhodius and Stephanus, on the east of the Thermodon, in Pontus; called Hali-mones, by Homer. They either gave their name to, or took it from, their iron manufactures (Xenophon, Val. Flaccus), their only support, their soil being barren and ungrateful, (Dionysius Periegetes).
