DIOCESE, or DIOCKSS, the circuit or extent of the jurisdiction of a BISHOP. The word is formed from the Greek διοικεῖν, government, administration; formed of διοικεῖν, which the ancient glossaries render administro, moderor, ordino: hence διοικεῖν τὰς πόλεις, the administration or government of a city.
