MARBURG, a city in the province of Upper Hesse, in the principality of Hesse Cassel. It stands in a beautiful situation on the river Lahn, which divides it into two parts, one of which gradually rises from the bank of the river. It is surrounded with walls, and has an ancient castle, once strongly fortified, but now neglected. It contains one Catholic, two reformed, and two Lutheran churches, with 790 houses, and 6850 inhabitants. It is the seat of a university, which has produced some distinguished men, and now consists of thirty-four professors, with about 250 students. It has a valuable library of 55,000 volumes, and establishments for instruction in the several branches of medical, legal, and theological instruction.
