In consequence of the difficulties of navigation occasioned by a bar about three miles below the town, a considerable part of the produce is sent to Alexandria for exportation. Georgetown College is a Catholic institution, under the direction of the incorporated Catholic clergy of Maryland. The population of this town in 1830 amounted to 8441.
