CORCYRA, in Ancient Geography, an island in the Ionian Sea, opposite to Thessprotia, a district of Epirus, and called Scheria and Phacacia by Homer. In Callimachus it is called Drepane, which, according to the Scholiast, was its most ancient name. It is famous for the shipwreck of Ulysses and the gardens of Alcinoos. Corcyra is now Corfu, one of the Ionian Islands.
