CORCYRA, the chief town of the island, formerly powerful, and capable of coping with mighty states. It is situated about the middle of the eastern side of the island. It was called the Town of the Phaeacians by Homer, and is now Corfu, from the Κόρυς of the middle ages, the name of the citadel. It was founded by a colony of Corinthians. Long. 19. 55. E.
