BRAGA (the ancient Augusta Bracara), the capital of the province of Entre Douro-e-Minho, in Portugal, is situated on an elevated plain near the river Savado. It is fortified, and defended by a citadel. The streets are irregular and ill paved, and the houses large, but of an antique fashion. It has an archbishopric, and besides the cathedral, numerous churches and monasteries, an archiepiscopal palace, and several hospitals. It has many fountains, and some Roman remains. Its chief manufactures are fire-arms, cutlery,
