COLUMBIUM, a metal discovered by Hatchett in 1801, in an American mineral. Several years afterwards it was rediscovered in a Swedish mineral, to which Ekeberg gave the name of Tantalite. Wollaston, however, showed that Ekeberg's new metal Tantalum was the same as Hatchett's Columbium. See CHEMISTRY.
