ALTDORF, or Altorf, a town of Switzerland, capital of the canton of Uri, situated near the southern extremity of the lake of Lucerne, and at the northern end of the pass over Mount St Gothard. It has a handsome parish church, a town-house, two convents, and an old tower, which tradition marks as the place where Tell shot the apple from his son's head. Pop. 1800. Long. 8. 30. E.
