ALTDORFER, ALBERT, a Bavarian painter and engraver, was born in 1488, and died in 1538. His few pictures show surprisingly minute and careful finish, in the ancient German manner, as is seen in his picture of the battle of Arbela, in the museum of Munich. His wood engravings are considered next in execution to those of Dürer, and his copperplates are well known, and very numerous.—See Bartsch. Peintres-graveur.
