EXPONENT

EXPONENT, or INDEX, in Algebra. See ALGEBRA, vol. ii., p. 491.

EXPONENT of the ratio, in arithmetic, is the quotient arising when the antecedent is divided by the consequent of the ratio. Thus 4 is the exponent of the ratio of 20 to 5; for $20\; \backslash div\; 5\; =\; 4$.
