BERCEA, an ancient city of Macedonia, S.W. of Pella, on the river Astræus, a tributary of the Halicmon. It is now known by the name of Boor. The Bercæans are commended in Scripture for their reception of the Gospel. There was another Bercæa in Syria, called also Beroe, and by the inhabitants Bercæa. It is supposed to be identical with the modern Aleppo, or Haleb, so called from Chalep, the name given to Bercæa by the Byzantine writers. There was a third town of this name in Thrace, between Philippopolis and Nicopolis.
