JOIGNY, a town of France, capital of a cognominal arrondissement, in the department of Yonne. It stands on the right bank of the Yonne, along which is a handsome quay, and extends up the steep acclivity of a hill, the summit of which is crowned by the ruins of an ancient castle. The town itself is surrounded by old walls, with six gates, and has two suburbs, one of which, on the opposite bank of the river, is accessible by a stone bridge. The streets are narrow, steep, and irregular. Chief public buildings are the cathedral, two hospitals, communal college, theatre, and cavalry barracks. Manufactures comprise coarse woollens, linen, leather, brandy, and vinegar. Pop. (1851) 6056.
