PAPENBURG, a town of Hanover, in the government
of Osnabrück, near the left bank of the Ems, 23 miles S.S.E. of Emden. It contains distilleries, saw-mills, and manufactories of sail-cloth. Many ships are built here; and an active trade is carried on. Pop. (1852), including the village of Drostensyhl, 5641.
