TERNATE, a small island in the East Indian Archipelago, off the W. coast of Gilolo, in the Moluccas. It is nearly circular in form, and about 10 miles in diameter, consisting almost entirely of a conical volcano, 5480 feet high, densely wooded up to a considerable height. Frequent and destructive eruptions have taken place. Cocoanuts, sago, tobacco, cotton, sulphur, and saltpetre are the chief productions of the island. The town of Ternate is the residence of a native sultan and a Dutch regent, and its harbour is commanded by a fort.
