The chief public buildings are,—the Gothic cathedral, the third in importance in Sweden; and the college, to which are attached a library containing upwards of 30,000 volumes, and a museum of natural history, archaeology, and coins. The chief manufactures are stockings and tobacco. Near the bridge which here spans the river the famous battle of Stångebro was fought on the 25th September 1596, between Sigismund and his uncle, afterwards Charles IX. of Sweden, when the latter was victorious. Pop. about 4000.
