the CLOVE-TREE, in botany, a genus of the polyandra monogynia clas. The corolla has four petals; the calyx consists of four duplicated leaves; and the berry contains one seed. There is but one species, viz. the aromaticus, a native of the Molucca islands. The cloves are the flower-cups, have a strong agreeable aromatic smell, and a bitterish pungent taste. The essential oil of cloves is an ingredient in many of our officinal compositions.
